Some Disadvantages of
Living in Singapore

If you're thinking of moving into Singapore, it is helpful for you to know about some of the disadvantages of staying here.

Singapore is indeed a modern, cosmopolitan city. However, it can also be very expensive and life can be quite stressful for the uninitiated.

Hence, if you're settling down in Singapore, be sure you weigh the pros and cons of coming here. Some might find it a great place, others may experience culture shock.

You will know that there are upsides in living overseas - but there are some downsides too. Let's say you have been offered a job in Singapore or you are a student who wants to study at a Singaporean university. Before you make a decision, learn about the advantages and disadvantages of living in this city.

1. Democracy

Singapore has a mixed culture and the society is very flexible. The weather is nice and pleasant and people are very friendly and helpful. Still there are some issues that need to be known. Singapore is a democratic state but when you come from a place that is not a democracy, some people would not take to the openness easily.

That doesn’t mean people coming from overseas will be in a shock. The experience of living in a communist country can be more of a shock. The need is to enjoy life the way it presents itself. People coming from strict Muslim countries can find the life style a bit offensive to the one they are used to and have been brought up in.

2. Distance

Distance is always measured in terms of miles or kilometers and Singapore being located in South East Asia is thousands of kilometers away from U.S., Europe and Africa. Once you have come here for either work or studies it is not always possible to get back home quickly.

However, in the last 10 – 15 years rates for international calls, Internet access and flights have reduced drastically making it possible to connect to other parts of the world affordable. As such, we do have better options of keeping in touch loved ones than our forefathers did.

3. Friends and Family

If you're coming to Singapore, give due consideration to your friends and family. You have lived all your life amongst friends, family and relatives. Never have you felt lonely and uncared. Friends form an essential part of society and to get cut off from it shall have long term effects. Your spouse and children could also miss they way they lived their lives with their parents and their friends. Think through this one - are you willing to risk all this for a brighter and more prosperous tomorrow?

Conclusion

Just as there are advantages to living in Singapore, there are also disadvantages. If you intend to move to Singapore, do give some consideration to the above points so that you can be absolutely convinced you are making the correct choice.
