Having A Baby
in Singapore?

Do you intend to have a baby in Singapore? Good for you!

Having your baby born in Singapore gives you great advantages. The city offers many hospitals and child-care facilities that are world-class.

In fact, many parents from nearby countries specially come to Singapore just to have their children born here - particularly if they suspect the childbirth will be a complicated procedure.

1. If You're A Foreign National

If you happen to be a foreign national who is planning the birth of your child in Singapore, then you can easily apply at your Embassy in Singapore. There are well established rules and regulations for such visitors. More information can be gathered at the Singapore Immigration office. If you plan to have an extended stay i.e., more than 30 days stay in Singapore then a longer visa/stay permit is required for which a local sponsor’s help can be acquired.

2. Registration

It is important not to forget to register the birth of your baby with the authorities as soon as possible. After you have registered the birth of the new born you can obtain the birth certificate. Acquiring a birth certificate does not mean that your new born is a Singaporean citizen.

You may be able to do this at the maternity hospital where you delivered. Make sure you have your passports, marriage certificate or equivalent available. If you have been visiting a doctor in your country before coming to Singapore then do not forget to carry the prescription and other record/ material. This will help the hospital and doctors garner leads about your health and progress made till date. You will also need to register with your embassy and procedures differ so check what they need before hand.

3. Choose A Good Doctor And Hospital

You will definitely need to choose a good doctor to deliver your baby. There are many famous gynecologists in Singapore, with the more well-known ones in private hospitals like Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital. You should check out not only the doctor's clinic but also visit the maternity wards of the hospital where you will deliver the baby. Many of the hospitals also offer childbirth classes and also help guide you in taking care of your newborn.

3. Insurance

There are some maternity packages that are offered by hospitals which cover a natural delivery. However it is a good idea to get an insurance cover. The insurance cover will help in case there are some extra costs owing to maternity complications. Do plan in advance as most insurance companies have 6-12 months cap before paying out on insurance claims.

Conclusion

If you intend to have a baby in Singapore, then do take note of the above points we've covered. If you need more help, feel free to ring up the hospitals or check out the Singapore Ministry of Health for more information.
