When To Go

Singapore is one of the busiest ports in the world with over 600 shipping lines. Super tankers, container ships and passenger liners share the busy waters with coastal fishing vessels.

Other highlights of the Singapore economy include its status as one of the world’s major oil refining and distribution centres. It is also a major supplier of electronic components and a leader in shipbuilding and repairing. In terms of finance, Singapore is one of the most important financial centres of Asia, with more than 130 banks.
 

Brief History

In the 14th century, Singapore was part of the mighty Sri Vijayan empire and was known as Temasek ("Sea Town"). It was a popular meeting point for sea routes at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. Most of the inhabitants were local fishermen and it was comprised of small villages.

In 18th century, the might British Empire wanted to counter the growth of Dutch power in the region. This led to the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles who established it as a trading station. A policy of free trade was enforced, attracting merchants from all over Asia and from as far as the US and the Middle East.

Another highlight in its history was the year 1832 – when Singapore became the centre of government for the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore.

During World War II, there was much fighting with the Japanese. The imperial Japanese army overran the island in 1942 and Japanese occupation lasted until 1945. After the war, Singapore became a British Crown Colony. The growth of nationalism led to self-government in 1959 and on 9 August 1965, Singapore became an independent republic.
