Essentially, this is a dry noodle-based dish
lavished with mouth-watering black sauce and mixed with oysters. If there is one
local dish I’d advise you to try in Singapore, it has got to be this dish.
2. Fish Ball NoodleAnother popular hawker centre food is the fish ball noodle. A staple amongst the locals, this tasty (usually soup-based) noodle dish is mixed with soft fish balls and make a very delicious lunch or dinner. You can also find fish ball noodles in any modernized food court in the island.3. Roti PrataAh, if you are in the mood for Indian food, then the number one dish to try, as all locals will tell you, is the famous Roti Prata! Roti Prata is not unlike the Naan dish found commonly in London.

It is a bread-based dish where you dip the bread into delicious Indian curry. Makes for an excellent breakfast. On Sunday mornings, I usually go to the Ghim Moh hawker centre near my home to eat roti prata with my wife and kids.
4. Ice KachangAre you getting thirsty from all that walking in the hot Singaporean sun? Well, my answer to you (if you’re near a hawker centre) is to head for the dessert stall and order this cold dessert called Ice Kachang. Ice Kachang is basically crushed ice mixed with red beans, jelly and sweet syrup. Try it, it will bring you to the seventh heaven of delight.5. Hainanese Chicken RiceAre you looking for authentic Chinese food? I think you are! Well, let me tell you – from the sea of Chinese food out there, one of the most popular dishes is Hainanese Chicken Rice. So be sure you try out this type of hawker centre food when you’re in town.6. Bar Kut TehAnother favorite Chinese dish that you will find interesting is Bar Kut Teh. I was speaking to a friend of mine in Thailand recently – whenever he visits Singapore, he will go out of his way to eat Bar Kut Teh. This is a peppery pork based soup that simply needs to be tasted to be understood. In fact, in recent news, an official from Hong Kong specially came to one of the famous Bar Kut Teh stalls in a Singaporean hawker centre just to try this dish!7. Chai Tao KuehStrange sounding name you say? Well, would you believe that this little dish, also called ‘fried carrot cake’ is the mainstay of hawker centre food in Singapore. It can be found in almost every hawker centre or food court in Singapore. I must admit I am guilty of eating this too much – you have to watch because this dish is pretty oily. Eat it and savor it occasionally – but not on a daily basis.ConclusionWow, I hope I’ve given you that choice selection of the most popular hawker centre food in Singapore. Incidentally, if you want to find a good hawker centre, there’s a good one at Newton Circus (very touristy) and at Maxwell Market and Ang Mo Kio. Happy eating!Related ArticlesYou may also wish to read the following related articles:
