Oh yes - Tanglin Mall. Why do we call it the Expatriate’ Haven? Well, on Sat and Sun, you’ll see throngs of expatriates,
especially Caucasians, bringing kids in tow and enjoying the food at this
place.
Tanglin Mall is a modern shopping mall
specializing in children’s toys, books and clothing. And food. In Tanglin
Mall, the two best things to look out for are children's clothing and food.
Always remember that.
Getting There
Getting to Tanglin Mall is a breeze. It’s right on the edge of town – just next to Trader’s Hotel. If you’re going by cab, just tell the driver ‘Tanglin Mall’ – he or she will know exactly where to go. I don’t suggest going by foot, bus or the subway – those modes of transport are not so convenient.
Step into the first floor of the mall – and you’ll see a large CD shop called
That CD Shop specializing in jazz and eclectic musical tastes. There’s also a
Marketplace grocery store (one of the most expensive in Singapore by the way) and a local ‘food court’ where you get many hawkers selling local food. The thing about Singaporean food courts is that you can try Japanese, Korean, Western, Chinese, Indian and Malay food all under one roof. Check it out – it’s amazing especially for first time visitors.
The Second Floor
Up to level 2, and you’ll see many small shops selling children's’ books, clothes from brand like
Osh Gosh and Mothercare. There are many small child development centers here too – if you need help with the kids – these centers are a good choice.
The Third Floor
On level 3, there is a Spageddies Italian restaurant. It serves great Italian food such as pasta, pizza and lasagna. You can also find
interesting stuff like crayfish pasta and tasty chocolate brownies. Oh yes, the brownies are heavenly – try them out.
Higher Levels
You can also find a furniture shop in the higher levels called
Barang Barang. ‘Barang’ is a Malay word which means ‘equipment’ – so the name is quite apt for the store. If you like, you can browse around and look at the traditional Asian furniture and knick knacks on sale. It’s very much like an IKEA store but with an Asian flavor.
So it’s worth checking out too.
By the way, Tanglin Mall is just next to the American Embassy and British Embassy. So if you’re American or British and need to get some papers done – well, help is just a stone’s throw away.
Conclusion
Well, I do hope I’ve given you some good information on Tanglin Mall, which is the the Expatriates' Haven in Singapore. Do drop by the next time you’re near town – you be well pleased with the variety of stuff you can find there. Good luck and happy holidays!
