The musical has been a recipient of several awards including Laurence Olivier and Evening Standard Award for Best Musical and seven Tony Awards.
 

2. History and Current Showings

The musical of The Phantom of The Opera opened at Her Majesty's Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles. Since then there have been sixteen productions world-wide.

Besides the shows from the West End Production, The Phantom of The Opera is currently been played in New York, Sao Paulo, Essen, Tokyo and Budapest, a production company is touring the United States and a new $35 million production is being specially developed for Las Vegas.

A Hollywood movie of the same name hit the screens at the end of December 2004. The movie was directed by Joel Schumacher. The show has held more than 65,000 performances in twenty countries in a hundred and ten cities around the world to over 80 million people.
 

3. Thrills at the Phantom

The Phantom of The Opera in Singapore will feature a scene where a chandelier flies over the audience and crashes onto the stage. The audience will however be absolutely safe and full safety measures are taken to avoid any such untoward incident. While witnessing the show audiences can be rest assured that all fool proof measure and counter measures are checked and rechecked as a precaution.

There are as many as seven different safety measures put in place and there all of the seven things will have to go wrong for an accident to occur. The Phantom of The Opera celebrated its 7000th performance at The Majestic Theatre in New York on 10 November 2004. On 9th October 2006, it celebrated its 20th birthday on the West End. So it is easy to see that the musical is one of the most successful shows of all time.

It has won over 50 major theatre awards during a life spanning more than three decades, including 3 Olivier Awards, the most recent being the 2002 Oliver Audience Award for Most Popular Show, an Evening Standard Award, 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 7 Drama Desk Awards and 3 Outer Critic Circle Awards.
