If you've a free day in Singapore, one of the
places you might be interested in visiting will be the Singapore Discovery
Centre.
This huge museum is dedicated
to exhibits illustrating Singapore's history and culture. You will find the
exhibits presented in a modern and interactive fashion - and very appealing
to the whole family.
Read on and find out more about the
Singapore Discovery Centre and how you can spend a day there ...
1. Overview
The Singapore Discovery Centre was opened way
back in 1996 (by our late President
Mr. Ong
Teng Cheong). What does the Discovery Centre do? Well, its primary purpose
is to educate and promote the Singapore Story through a variety of entertaining and interactive activities.
You will be impressed by the centre's size. It
occupies a floor area of some 4,500 square metres, and has 5 main galleries
centred around 8 themes. You will witness Singapore’s past, present and future,
while going through time to key events in our country's history.
You might also be interested to know that the new Discovery Centre premises are designed by
Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA).
This is the same design firm behind famous places such as the
Smithsonian Institute in Washington, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the
National Science and Technology Museum in Taiwan.
2. What
Exhibits Are There?
Well, there are plenty of exhibits in the
Singapore Discovery Centre.
One of the chief highlights is the world’s largest team-based
interactive design studio. What is this, you ask? Well, it is a huge globe with
a 360-degree wrap-around
screen inside. You can sign up for a session to make creative choices about
living in Singapore. The final design is then promptly presented on the wrap around screen.
Cool stuff huh?
There are several other great exhibits like:
So Singapore Theatre: An exhibit
showcasing what makes Singapore so unique.
On Location Reporter: Want to
experience broadcast
journalism? Try it out at exhibit.
Security Pavilion: An exhibit on
Singapore's security and why the country cannot take security for granted.
Unity Pavilion: Try out a fast-paced trivia show,
along with insightful nuggets and various little games.
Gateway: An interesting exhibit that
uses the elements of Fire, Earth and Wind to present Singapore’s history.
