How To Spend Your First
Few Days In Singapore

Let's imagine a little scenario. You've just moved to Singapore, but you're not sure what to do the first few days you're here.

So what is a stranger in a strange land to do when he or she arrives? Well, not to worry. This article walks you through some of the essential activities you should do in the first few days when you arrive in Singapore.

Let's start with the most important thing ... accommodation. Then we'll talk about other essentials, such as where to buy necessities and getting access to shopping, together with facilities like hospitals and clinics.

1. Where Do You Stay?

No matter how tired or jet-lagged you are when you arrive at night, the first thing you need to do is to get accommodation. If you have previously made the necessary arrangements, then the following may not apply to you.

If you need to stay for a few days, then you have a couple of options. A hotel is probably a good choice if you are staying for a limited number of days, and the hotel staff can help you see if your luggage has arrived. A serviced apartment is the next choice, and will enable you to stay there for a bit longer.

2. Locate A Convenience Store

Once you settle the accommodation problem, the next most important thing is to locate a convenience store. Singapore has many 7-Eleven shops which run 24 hours and allow you to buy necessities like toiletries, water and food. Time to get those shaver blades if you run out of them ...

3. Buy An Ez Link Card

Next, try to get an Ez Link card. This stored valued card is very useful indeed if you're traveling all over Singapore. You can use it to take the subway (Mass-Rapid Transit) or take the bus. You probably won't want to take taxis if you're staying in Singapore for long - they are definitely more expensive and near impossible to catch from 9 pm to 12 am.

4. Other Things To Do

If you're staying for long, or maybe even settling in Singapore, then he should try to do the following:

  • Locate a laundry place (there are not many in Singapore, so check before hand)
  • Locate a hospital or clinic
  • Get connected to the Internet
  • Locate a groceries store (Cold Storage is very popular with expatriates)
  • Find a place to have fun (which, depending on your tastes, could be a park, a club, a museum or maybe an arts house.
  • Find a good place to buy furniture (e.g. IKEA at Queenstown is a natural choice)
  • Find a good place to eat food (e.g. you usually want to find a good hawker centre or maybe a small eatery somewhere)
  • Find a school for the kids (check out this link to find out more).
  • Locate a good place to go shopping!

Conclusion

I hope the above gives you some excellent tips on settling into Singapore in the first few days. If you're moving to Singapore, the above tips will prove invaluable for you. Till next time, happy adventures in Singapore!
